I'm a retired firefighter and this model just gets me the feels. I simply had to get it. Construction wise, it was smooth sailing for me, maybe because I had an engineering background. I sand all the sheets before removing the parts. I used a 400 sand paper first pass to smooth the grain, then a 1500 shine the surface. I did not use the wax, but I did use graphite everywhere. The pencil rubbed against the surfaces till shiny to give a very slick surface and does not increase the thickness of the parts, but can leave smudges. It's now looking great on my table top.
The design and instructions are seriously top quality. Nothing in here was too complicated to put together as long as you have sandpaper/file and you pay attention to some of the visual guides. The moving mechanism is very elegant and easy.It took me about 2 hours to assemble and id say anyone over 15 could do it by themselves.
Everything goes together and functions perfectly if done with care. I have just about all of these kits and enjoyed every one of them. Fascinating just operating the mechanism to move the ladder and If I could give it ten stars I would do so in a heartbeat. Lol well I guess I can in a way.
It is an Interesting and well made model. It was fun to put together and watch how it runs across the room after(hardwood floor, no carpet). Highly satisfied with the purchase and a fun 5 hours of assembling the model.
What an amazing piece! The designed cutouts is impressive. Gave a couple of hours of pure joy to the person I gifted it to during construction, and we all loved seeing it in action upon completion. Be sure to follow the instructions to a T, including waxing the parts as instructed (it will move so much more fluidly if you do).
I bought as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it. Construction can get kind of clunky no wax are used, but eventually the wood works together and loosens up a bit. Comes with a FEW spare pieces so be VERY careful when popping them out of their trays. I used an exacto knife to precisely cut the toothpicks without having to file them down. Great gift and great quality overall.
Absolutely impressed, the complexity and precision of the wooden gears in action is top shelf. My 8 year old daughter and I built it slowly over the course of 3 days with minimal woodworking skills/tools.I'm very satisfied with the building experience!
