This is one of the more unique designs I have seen for laser cut wooden assembly kits. I never would have thought gears and cellos might go together. This kit brought back memories of when I was 12 years old and I was assembling model car kits. Wooden kits in those day had nowhere near the precession cuts these current kits have.I have assembled other laser cut wooden puzzles from this manufacturer. Every one of these had an interesting design and was a pleasure to assemble.According to the box the skill level for this kit is 4 out of 5. I think that is reasonable. The builder must be VERY careful removing pieces from the forms. As a sign of a good and thoughtful manufacturer, they provide one or more duplicates of many of the small or delicate pieces. I actually needed one of those. A piece used to form a side of the cello is long and extremely fragile. When assembling the piece to the back of the cello I had a minor slip and then I had two pieces. ROKR provided two spares of this particular piece.I strongly recommend you have some tweezers to help you hold and assemble pieces. As my picture shows I had a fine point tweezer for handling small objects and to aid in pressing tabs into the correct position. The back end of the tweezers was great for pressing pieces together. The kit includes a wooden tool for such tasks but I found the flat end of the tweezers worked better. The second tweezer I used had a wide and angled head. I was able to grab, hold or steady pieces as necessary.Pay VERY close attention to all assembly steps. In particular, the first main section of steps was for the assembly of the gear mechanism. Assemble these pieces exactly as illustrated. Do not hurry. I found it too easy to second guess assembly steps only to discover I assembled something wrong. The incorporation of a stand is very cleaver. The assembly process generally went smoothly. The only issue I had was toward the end where you are attaching the cello to the book-stand. You need to push the cello hard at various places and I was so afraid of damaging the cello. I took my time and I was extra careful about pressing at proper locations. Nothing broke. I think that says something about the quality of the build materials. My result, the cello music box worked correctly at the end. The run through the animation cycle was a bit herky-jerky at first but smoothed out after it ran a while. That was probably due to the wax lubrication needing to getting to all necessary parts.
This was my 6th 3D wooden puzzle and it was really fun. It has beautiful detail and is delicate. Everything worked in the finished product and it has nice music. I think it is my favorite project thus far. The instructions are detailed and have written instructions along with pictures. If you pay close attention to detail you should have no problem. I highly recommend it!
This is one of the best models I've ever owned. The cool factor is off the charts.
First, the craftsmanship is superb. Everything fits and is very precisely cut. Sure, it has some of the issue that you will always get with wooden pieces, but it's nearly perfect right out of the box without a lot of sanding or deburring needed. Some, but not much.
The assembly is pretty complicated, but the instructions are great and I'd say they're just about right by saying ages 12 to 16. It should be 12 and up, because I don't know why it would need to stop at 16. I guess because it's meant for kids. But, to be honest, I love this kind of thing and I'm a bit older than 16. Okay quite a bit.
I still haven't finished it completely because I just love putting together models and once this is done, I'll be sad until I find another one. The music box is a great little extra that most people won't expect.
