This is a wonderful kit. The car took me about a total of two weeks to build. This is meant for an advanced builder, all parts must be sanded and waxed. Especially the motor and drive of the train. The engine is powered by large twists of rubber bands which are wound up by a crank in the front. Ingenious design and elegant are words I would use for this kit.
This was fun to put together. The mechanical work correctly, but I had to finagle them a lot. There's a Youtube video of a guy building one of these step by step. That certainly helps with getting it to work correctly. I have since built another model and will rate that. I'm glad I did this one first. I would do it again in a second.
I absolutely loved putting this together. It is very straightforward with easy to follow directions. Make sure you use lots of wax on the moving parts and you will have no trouble at all. The more you use it, the more it breaks itself in and runs freely. Can’t wait to put another one together! Another plus, is they include spare parts for some of the items more prone to breaking.
Amazing attention to detail. Very high quality parts (appears to be HDF & plywood, not MDF). But beware! Some parts are delicate & difficult to put together. Extreme patience is required! Extreme calm & Zen are returned for the effort. Plus, the finished product is beautiful.
Unlike many other reviews I see here I had no real issues assembling this car. I do slightly agree that the drive system on the rear half of the car isn't as strong as what they have done in the past on other builds, but once assembled it really doesn't come into play. Not a terribly lengthy build either so it could be done in a long evening if you wish.
This was a very complex and time consuming to build. I loved it! the working motor is amazing. Sanding and waxing on the smaller parts in the motor will make this run like a charm. It is fast and looks amazing! I just loved this one. The instructions are great. the spar parts are great. I'm not too happy with the "hand crank' used to wind this. the gear and crank broke apart quickly. You do get spare parts for these however. caution is needed when winding. I coated the extra parts with white glue, let dry and lightly sanded. this will harden these vulnerable parts. I have had no issues since. I would buy this again. Just a joy to build!
What a wonderful model. All the laser-cut parts fit exactly. The quality and detail were on par with the models. The 50 page instruction manual was clear and concise. I really had fun with this. A word of wisdom, though; when the manual says to sand a part, sand it. And when it says to wax them. wax them. I found that Johnson's paste wax and a small brush work better than a candle especially in the cogs of the gears. I would recommend this to adult builders. I will buy more UGEARS models.
I’ve built a few of these types of kits, but this car was my favorite. Lots of clever touches, yet nothing pointless. It uses toothpicks like many of these models do, but only as fasteners which some kits use them as axles but they are too weak and poorly suited. The instructions, while fine in other areas, don’t adequately point out all the contact areas. Gently sand everything that rubs. And the fan needs to be trimmed down so it doesn’t strike the adjacent gear and stop everything from moving. You’ll be amazed at how smoothly a couple of rubber bands can simultaneously turn an 8-cylinder engine, complete with 16 moving valves, a transaxle, a bunch of gears, and the two drive wheels.
